*****PLEASE NOTE: Sitka has been sold.
We would like to wish her new owner many happy years of riding Sitka! Happy trails!
"Sitka" is an 11 year old Appaloosa Mare. She rides English or Western, and I have owned her since March of 2008. Sitka has been my own riding horse throughout these years and I am offering her for sale. Sitka stands just at 14.3 hands. She is a sane, calm riding horse. I have used her exclusively for trail riding. She is sure footed on the trails, doesn't balk at crossing water, walking through mud, is easily ridden through tall weeds and under low tree branches, steps over fallen trees calmly (or will jump them if you ask,) and does not freak out about common issues on the trail such as deer and other horses acting up. I've spent a lot of time riding her, both alone and with other riders and unfamiliar horses. She is steady and trustworthy and just a lovely horse to own. She has no issues with cows, rides along the road and doesn't worry about traffic, and is not worried about dogs at all. I have also played around with jumping her over small jumps and riding around barrels and poles. I do know who her 2 previous owners were, and one of them was a child in 4H. I'm not sure if Sitka ever did any of the 4H fun shows, but I'm guessing that she has at least experienced more than I have asked of her as far as barrels and poles go. I don't show horses, so haven't bothered to do much more than trail ride with her.
Sitka has been used as a "first ride" for my young niece when she came to visit...My niece had never been on a horse before, and Sitka safely carried her on a 3 hour trail ride. Sitka has also been used on the trails as a "lead horse" because for a while, my son and his friend were training ponies, and we would use Sitka's calm way of going to keep the ponies reassured and calm on the trails when issues came up that they had not encountered before. Sitka would absolutely be a great horse for a lady, or child. She is not a huge horse, but is stocky and strong. I would suggest that her next owner/rider weigh no more than 200 lbs however. Sitka would make a nice "husband horse" also. This mare could be ridden by an unexperienced and less confidant rider, but I would suggest that the riding be supervised by someone who knows horses.
This mare is up to date on her vaccinations and coggins. She has been well cared for, is healthy, sound and sane. She stands for the farrier with no fuss, has nice hooves, and I have not ever had to put shoes on her. I've ridden her a lot on dirt trails, and on gravel roads, and she doesn't get ouchy or lame. She typically gets her hooves trimmed every 8-10 weeks. Sitka loads and unloads from the horse trailer with no issues. She stands tied calmly, stands to be saddled, stands to be mounted, and will stand if you want to stop on the trail without dancing around impatiently. She has been trail ridden all over Star Fort, and has been to Fells Camp also on a 7 or so hour ride. ~That's a long day in the saddle, but she arrived back at the trailer behaving exactly the way she behaved when we started off...calm and cool. She waits her turn on the trails, doesn't rush forward, doesn't tailgate other horses, and will lead on the trail ride or happily go along in the middle of the group, or be at the end of the line. She doesn't care one way or the other.
Here are a few videos of Sitka.
None of the videos were edited, the horse wasn't worked before I made the videos, and this horse has been ridden once in the past 2 months. What you see in these videos is a horse that was pulled up from the pasture and this is how she behaved. She's responsive and ready to go...but in a safe way. I have no time for her anymore and am sadly offering her for sale. She's a great horse, trustworthy, and fun to ride. $800.00 firm. I can provide references if you would like them of people I have sold horses/ponies to before. They will all tell you that I was honest about the horses they bought, and when/if they had questions afterwards, I was willing to talk them through things.
